Employing sophisticated computers and advanced measuring electronics, Dynacord’s research & development department is constantly working at full speed designing new and intelligent products “from musicians – for musicians”.

As customer feedback constantly reaffirms, many parts last an entire musical lifetime. This unclouded enjoyment is the result of an exhaustive and meticulous series of tests that begins, as Wolfgang Horn, EVI Audio’s Director of Quality Control, explains, in the development phase. Not only quality but also reliability are, so to speak, ‘designed in’ to the devices. Problems, such as thermal instability and circuit overload, that could lead to failure or compromised acoustic quality are identified at the design stage and ways found of circumventing them. The effectiveness of these preventive measures is then rigorously tested along with the basic functioning of the device, and as the development progresses, the tests become ever more stringent. “With new technologies requiring fundamental research,” says Horn, “it can take from 3 to 5 years before a design is ready for series production.” At the manufacturing stage, too, tolerances are checked constantly and even minute deviations from the design specification lead to rejection of the offending parts. The upshot of all this is a statistic that explains why any EVI logo is now seen a hallmark of quality: “The average failure rate,” Hall told us, “is less than one per cent!”
